My first stop on my recent trip in Turkey was in Goreme, a small but magnificent town in Cappadocia. So upon arriving, I checked the tours which I can avail on the following day. Upon checking, I can see that there are several tours being offered like ‘Green tour’, ‘Red tour’, ‘Rose Valley Tour’, ‘ATV tour’, ‘Horse riding tour’, and ‘Hot Air Balloon Tour’. But in this post, I will be discussing about an itinerary which you can avail if you want a whole-day tour while in Cappadocia, it’s called the Green Tour I will be discussing the price and the different places and stops included plus the start time & end time of the Green Tour.
The Green Tour is like the longest of all tours you can avail in Cappadocia, it starts from 9:30 in the morning and ends around 6:00 in the evening and it costs 100 Turkish Liras(30USD). You can usually avail this tour at any Travel and Tours Agency in Goreme or at your accommodation itself as they are mostly linked to a Travel and Tours Agency. In my case, my host arranged the tour for me through Hiro Travel and Tours, one of the best in Cappadocia.
Goreme Panorama -> Kaymakli Underground City-> Selime Monastery -> Ihlara valley -> Onyx Demonstration -> Pigeon Valley
The tour starts with a shuttle picking you up from your hostel. Make sure to have everything ready by the time they pick you up as other people are waiting to be picked up as well; just a common courtesy to not cause any delay. After they have picked-up everyone, you will then head to your first stop, which is the Goreme Panorama, a 10 minute drive from Goreme Town Center. You will then spend a total of 30 minutes in the place, so make sure to enjoy the view and don’t forget to take photos, etc.
Goreme Panorama, a valley filled with different rock formations and cave houses that can be viewed from a view deck parallel to the main highway.
After Goreme Panorama you will then drive for 30 minutes to the next stop which is the Kaymakli Underground City located in the province of Nevsehir, you will then spend a total of 45-50 minutes here. Kaymakli Underground City, a magnificent man-made colony- like structure which was made centuries back by the first settlers of Cappadocia. The underground city is believed to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food. As of the moment, tourists are only allowed to access until 25 meters underground , although it extends to a depth of approximately 60 meters.
After exploring Kaymakli Underground City, you will then head to a local restaurant for lunch. For the lunch, it is already included in the price which you’ve paid for the tour. However, drinks aren’t included, so therefore you need to pay extra whenever you order a drink. The lunch stop has a total of 1-hour duration.
After lunch, you will then head to Selime Monastery, The journey takes around 20-30 minutes from Nevsehir, and from there you can get a great view of the Yaprakihisar Panorama.
After Selime Monastery, you will then continue your journey to Ihlara valley in the Aksaray Province, the journey takes around 30-40 minutes from Serime Monastery. So upon arriving, your tour guide will then lead you to a 4 kilometers hike along the valley which would take approximately 1-1.5 hours depends on how fast you walk.
After the Hike, you will then head to your second to the last stop which is in a Jewellery Shop to witness some Demonstration with Onyx stones. The journey from Ihlara Valley to here takes around 1-hour, just enough time to take some rest from the hike.
After the Onyx Demostration, you will then head back to Goreme, along the way, you will see the Pigeon Valley, a rock formation filled with holes which serves as houses for pigeons. The pigeon valley was used before by the people to breed pigeons for different purposes.
After the tour, you will then be dropped at your hostel to enjoy a great glass of Cappadocian wine!
